Moving off an old PABX

A PABX replacement rarely goes wrong in the design. It goes wrong on the day: a number that stops ringing, a menu nobody tested, staff who never saw the new phones. We plan the move so the old system keeps working until the new one has proved itself.

Where you are moving from

An old PABX

Analogue or digital, in the server room or a cupboard, and nobody left who can reprogram it.

Another hosted provider

A phone service you rent from someone else, moved onto a system you can see and change.

Personal mobiles

Staff answering the business on their own phones, and a front-desk line that rings out after five.

3CX with another partner

The same software and the same licence, with us as your partner from now on.

How the move runs

Five steps, and the old system working until the last one
  1. Survey

Your lines, numbers, phones, wiring, and who answers what today.

  2. Design

The menu, queues and hours, agreed with the people who run each team.

  3. Build and test

The new system set up alongside the old one, and tried by your staff.

  4. Switch

The numbers are switched over last, at a quiet time you choose.

  5. Settle in

Training, then the first days watched closely before the old system goes.

How long each step takes comes from the survey. New numbers, if you need them, can take longest, because their application runs on the provider's timetable, so they are started first.

Keeping what still works

Your numbers

Whether a number can move depends on the operator that holds it, and we check that before planning around it. Where it cannot move, it can be forwarded, or the line can stay and be connected to the new system through a gateway.

Your phones

Analogue phones can usually stay, connected through gateways on the wiring you already have. IP phones that 3CX supports can be set up on the new system; we check the models on the survey. Some people end up on the apps instead.

How callers are answered

We write down how calls are handled today, including the things nobody wrote down: who picks up when reception is at lunch, which line the supplier always rings. The new system starts from that, then improves on it.

Your staff

Everyone tries the new phones and apps before the day, and the people who run each team are trained on their part of it. Every setup package ends with a handover, and the larger ones include training hours. The move itself is part of the Contact Centre package; with Quick Start or Business, we quote it after the survey.

Questions about moving

Will we lose calls on the day we switch?

We plan so that you do not. The new system is built and tested while the old one carries on, your staff try it before the day, and the numbers are switched over last, at a quiet time you choose. Until the new system has proved itself, the old one stays connected.

Can we keep our analogue phones?

Usually, yes. Analogue phones connect to the new system through gateways on the wiring you already have, so the handsets can stay where they are. We confirm it phone by phone on the survey, because old wiring is where the surprises are.

Can we keep our numbers?

One way or another, yes. Whether a number can move depends on the operator that holds it, and we check that first. Where it cannot, it can be forwarded, or the line can stay and be connected to the new system through a gateway.

Do we need new desk phones?

Not necessarily. IP phones that 3CX supports can be set up on the new system, and analogue phones can stay through gateways. Some people will find they no longer want a desk phone at all, once the app is on their computer and mobile.

We already run 3CX with another partner. Can we move to you?

Yes, and you keep your licence, your system and your number. We look over the system first, so we know what we are taking on, and then renew and support it like any other, on a support plan if you want one. The best time is 60 to 90 days before the licence renews.

Once you have moved, a support plan keeps it running.

Already running 3CX with someone else? Moving it to us keeps your licence, your system and your number.
